"Lynn Truss' Eats Shoots and Leaves"
an award winning book review by Judy M. Goodman
When someone turned me on to Eats, Shoots & Leaves: The Zero Tolerance Approach to Punctuation by Lynne Truss, my entire life changed. Ms Truss is a British journalist with the sort of intelligent humor into which you can nestle, basking in its sunshine, until it jumps up and bites the tip of your nose. Not a grammar book, it quietly rales against the improper use of punctuation today. Truss despairs of the epidemic of punctuation like that which a grocer used when advertising "EGG’S, 1.29 A DOZEN."
Though I was never a punctuation ace, I agree punctuation should be taken more seriously in modern society. I learned much from the history of each mark and her clear explanation of its intent. Not only am I a steadfast minion in her crusade for clarity, but also I no longer consider commas the S & M portion of writing.
